The London Marathon 2018

Ready...set...GO! It's that time of year again where people flock from far and wide to our capital city to participate in and support the Virgin Money London Marathon!

Each year, more than 50,000 people participate in the 26.2-mile race. Some are top athletes, but most are people from all walks of life giving it their all to get fit, challenge themselves or to raise money for charity. It’s tough-going to say the least, but if you’re prepped in both your diet and exercise regime, the marathon can be a truly rewarding experience!

Whether you’re taking part in the marathon, planning to get into running or supporting fellow runners, Costcutter has plenty to offer in-store so that you are prepared for anything!

Nobody wants to be feeling full and sluggish for the race, but you also don’t want to be light headed and dizzy from not eating! So, what’s the solution? Two things – carbs and hydration.

Before you run, fuel up on high carb, low fat foods such as our delicious Coconut Power Balls and Quinoa Breakfast Bars. Eating these 2-4 hours before the race begins will keep you full for longer, without making you feel stuffed.

Before and during the run, it’s also important to stay hydrated. Taking regular, small sips of water and energy drinks will boost your energy stores. Pop in to your local Costcutter to see our fantastic energy drinks deals!

Let’s be honest – a lot of us would love to get out there pounding the pavement with other runners and reap the benefits. However, once you’re in the house and get sat down, it’s normally a “I’ll try again tomorrow” scenario (especially in winter!)

But have no fear! You CAN become a runner, you just need the confidence to take that first step! One great place to start is to find a local “Couch to 5K” club – you’ll be surprised how many are in your local area and you’ll meet so many like-minded people.

Or if you want to go it alone, start with a regular, brisk walk each week with a set route and distance (you could walk your dog at the same time or listen to some music to help motivate you!) Then, begin to mix walking with jogging on this same route, and keep a track of the time it takes you. Eventually, you’ll find yourself running more than you’re walking and BOOM! You are a runner! If you can run for 30 minutes non-stop then this is a great achievement to then build upon.

Remember, always eat the right food before and after your run to get the best results – we have some delicious recipes to help you with this!

If you’re going along to support somebody at the marathon, make sure you’re prepared. It’s a long day for both runners and spectators! We have some yummy picnic food recipes to prepare and take along with you to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

Don’t forget to pick up some sweets from your local Costcutter too – Jelly Babies and marshmallows are a fantastic source of energy that are easy to give passing runners!

So, whether you’re a runner or a spectator, make sure you’re prepared as best as you can be and stop by your local Costcutter for your meal prep essentials!
